The 44-year-old daughter of former New York Yankees manager, Joe Torre, Cristina Torre, caught a baby that was falling out of a window when he dropped from a fire escape on Third Avenue and 91st Street in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.
When a man ran into a cupcake shop she was having coffee in asking someone to call 911, she said she got up out of her seat to see what all the fuss was about. When she got out on to the street, she saw the 1-year-old.
“I quickly got up and looked, and there was a baby kind of straddling the fire escape between the second and the third floor," she told NBC New York. "All of a sudden it slipped, and it was dangling and holding on with its hands.”
She said she strategically placed herself where she thought the baby would drop. "I was still talking to 911 and I just put out my arms, and literally, it was effortless," she said. "It was meant to be. He landed in my arms."
Her father told NBC about the heroic act. "The kids are our future and when you get a situation where the good Lord puts you in a position where you're there, and a child's life is in your hands, literally, it feels good to me. I know it did to her.”
The baby’s parents, Sam Miller, 23, and Tiffany Demitro, 24, have been arrested on reckless endangerment and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17 charges. Their pastor has installed window guards.
CNN reports the baby is in stable condition after being taken to Lutheran Medical Center.
