Helena Bonham Carter lands fairy godmother role for Disney’s ‘Cinderella’

Helena Bonham Carter, who played the Queen of Hearts in Disney’s live-action Alice In Wonderland, will work with the studio again. The Oscar nominee has been cast as the fairy godmother in Cinderella.

Disney confirmed the news on Twitter, like the studio has done with previous casting news on the film.

Carter is the latest star to join the project. The first was Cate Blanchett, who will play the evil stepmother. In April, Downton Abbey actress Lily James snagged the title role and Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) has been cast as the prince.

The film will be directed by Kenneth Branagh, who was last behind the camera for Marvel’s Thor. He is currently finishing Paramount’s Jack Ryan reboot, which will be out on Christmas Day.

Carter starred in Branagh’s 1994 version of Frankenstein. She’s earned two Oscar nominations, including one for The King’s Speech and she starred in Les Miserables last year. She appeared in Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland, the live-action fantasy adventure that has started Disney’s current trend of turning its animated films into live action blockbusters. The studio is currently working on Maleficent, based on Sleeping Beauty. That one comes out in 2014.
