The characters of Orange is the New Black aren’t getting out of prison any time soon. Netflix announced today that the show has been renewed for an unprecedented three more seasons.
OITNB’s fourth season does not premiere until June 17, but the streaming service has decided to renew the show for a fifth, sixth and seventh season. That means that it could have more years than House of Cards, which is only renewed up through season five.
And also unlike House of Cards, OITNB isn’t losing its showrunner. Jenji Kohan has committed to steering the show through season seven.
“Three more years! Not quite a political term, but still plenty of time to do some interesting things. In some cultures, ‘May you lead an interesting life,’ is a curse, but I don't live in those cultures,” Kohan said in a statement. “Here's to keeping it interesting. Thanks Netflix! Both thanks and you're welcome Lionsgate! And kudos and gratitude to the stellar cast and crew and writers and producers and editors and musicians and mixers and shleppers... with whom I have the pride and honor of crafting this show. Three more years! Three more years!”
OITNB was created by Kohan and is based on Piper Kerman’s memoir about life in a women’s prison. The cast includes Taylor Schilling, Laverne Cox, Uzo Aduba, Kate Mulgrew, Dascha Polanco, Danielle Brooks, Selenis Leyva, Samira Wiley and Taryn Manning. It is produced by Lionsgate.
The show has won Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Comedy Series at the SAG Awards two years in a row, and Aduba has two Emmys and two SAG Awards for her performance. OITNB was also nominated for six Golden Globes.
