Among the many movie spots Super Bowl 50 viewers had to see was for Independence Day: Resurgence, the long-awaited sequel to the 1996 blockbuster. The spot took full advantage of footage we have never seen before and culminated with a shot of Jeff Goldblum, just to prove that someone from the original film will be back.
In the spot, we see more destruction from the aliens, who have returned 20 years after the events of Independence Day, as the “Star Spangled Banner” is sung. At the end, Goldblum’s David Levinson ominously says, “What comes up, must come down.” We also see Liam Hemsworth shooting down aliens and Jessie Usher (who plays the son of Will Smith’s character) looking really concerned.
20th Century Fox previously released a trailer in December. The cast also includes Judd Hirsch, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Maika Monroe, Bill Pullman, Sela Ward, Vivica A. Fox and Joey King. Roland Emmerich is directing again and the film opens on July 24.
