Red Sox sign David Price, make him MLB’s highest-paid pitcher

Dave Dombrowski is certainly changing things up for the Boston Red Sox. In order to reunite with David Price, he’s signed him to the largest contract ever for a pitcher.

The deal was first reported by The Boston Globe’s Pete Abraham and confirmed by Fox Sports’ Ken Rosenthal. It’s worth $217 million over seven years, the most ever for a pitcher.

Rosenthal reports that the annual value of the deal is $31 million, tying Miguel Cabrera for the largest in baseball history. It is pending a physical.

Price, 30, has spent his entire career in the American League, so the Red Sox know him well, especially since he spent his first six and a half seasons on the Tampa Bay Rays. During the 2014 season, Dombrowski acquired Price with the Detroit Tigers. After Dombrowski was fired during the 2015 season, Price was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays, where he helped Toronto to the playoffs.

However, the Red Sox have to know that Price isn’t good in the playoffs at all, turning into a different pitcher in October. He is just 2-7, with a whopping 5.12 ERA. During the ALCS this season, he was 1-1 for the Jays. But clearly, the Red Sox are banking on Price at least getting them out of the AL East basement.
