For the rest of his life, LeBron James will be wearing Nike. The Cleveland Cavaliers superstar, who is still only 30, signed a lifetime deal with the brand.
Terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed, but ESPN reports that it is likely the first lifetime deal Nike has ever agreed to.
“We can confirm that we have agreed to a lifetime relationship with LeBron that provides significant value to our business, brand and shareholders,” Nike said Monday. “We have already built a strong LeBron business over the past 12 years, and we see the potential for this to continue to grow throughout his playing career and beyond.”
It’s clear that Nike plans on keeping its relationship with James going, even after he retires from basketball. The deal is perfect for Nike. The company has sold a reported $340 million worth of James’ shoe line during 2014, reports CNBC.
James has been with Nike since he graduated from high school in 2003 and signed a $90 million deal.
James told reporters on Monday that it was “humbling,” adding, “It's been an unbelievable time for myself and my family, and I'm just grateful that Nike and [Nike founder] Phil Knight and everyone over there just believed in a skinny-old, skinny 18-year-old kid from Akron, Ohio, and I'm happy to be a part of such a great company.”
James is a two-time NBA Finals champion and is still trying to help the Cavs win their first ever NBA Finals championship. They lost in the Finals last season to the Golden State Warriors.
