Former New York Giants linebacker Quincy Monk dies

Former New York Giants and University of North Carolina player Quincy Monk passed away from cancer on Tuesday. He was 36.

His alma mater confirmed the news via social media.

"We are deeply saddened to learn that UNC's Quincy Monk passed away today," the school tweeted. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family."

Upon hearing the news his former Tarheel coach Larry Fedora said, “In the brief time I knew him, it became clear how great of person he was, how much this university meant to him and how much this football program was part of his life.”

The Sporting News noted that back in June, Monk suffered a stroke and the very aggressive form of cancer called adenocarcinoma was eventually discovered through follow-up doctor visits.

A GoFundMe page was established to help pay for his cancer treatments. It had reached $60,000 of the $100,000 at the time of his death.

Monk was a standout at UNC. For his NFL career, he spent two years with the Giants and later played in two games for the Houston Texans.

He is survived by his wife Lisa and their two young children Naomi and Aiden.
