Ex-NFL and CFL running back Lawrence Phillips has been charged with the murder of his prison cellmate.

The Kern County district attorney's office in California announced on Wednesday that Phillips, 40, was charged with first degree murder in the death of 37-year-old Damion Soward.
As we reported last April, Soward was found unresponsive in his cell and later pronounced dead at a hospital. His cause of death was strangulation. Authorities said then that Phillips was a suspect in the killing, however, formal charges were not filed at the time.
Phillips, who was a star player at Nebraska, only played in the NFL for a short time with the St. Louis Rams, the Miami Dolphins and the San Francisco 49ers. He then had brief stints up north in the CFL with the Montreal Alouettes and Calgary Stampeders. He was later arrested and is currently serving a sentence for domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend and hitting three teenagers with his vehicle after a pickup football game.
If convicted of murder, he faces life in prison.
