Al Roker, Sam Champion’s shows cancelled as Weather Channel cuts costs

The Weather Channel is cutting costs and for Al Roker and Sam Champion that means that they will each lose their morning shows.

CNN Money reported that the station laid out a cost-cutting plan which includes yanking its reality shows for more actual weather coverage and programming, letting several staffers go and pulling the plug on Roker and Champion’s newscast.

Weather Company CEO David Kenny blamed the cuts on cable bundles.

He pointed to skinny bundles and said, “it's inevitable that channels will be cut.”

The Hollywood Reporter noted that Champion’s last morning show will be on Oct. 30. After that, the station said he will focus on primetime weather reporting and digital projects.

Roker’s Wake Up with Al meanwhile is taped in New York, where the Weather Channel is closing one of its studios. His last show will be on Oct. 2, however, the Today weatherman will be featured during the station’s severe weather spots and like Champion, is set to work on more digital-type ventures.

Champion began working for the Weather Channel in 2013 and Roker started in 2009.
