TLC's 'Sister Wives' stars use Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage in polygamy case

The stars of TLC’s Sister Wives, Kody Brown and his four wives, are using Supreme Court’s ruling of making same-sex marriages legal as evidence to support polygamy.

Their attorney, Jonathan Turley, also argued in paperwork filed with the 10th Circuit Court of Appeal on Wednesday, that their show proves polygamist families are just as stable as any other.

"The Browns were investigated and no crimes or harm was found in their plural family," Turley argued, Fox News reports.

Their argument cites the legalization of gay marriage proves the traditional idea of marriage is outdated.

Salt Lake Tribune reports the Browns are not championing for the legal recognition of polygamist unions, instead they’re fighting the state of Utah's appeal to reinstate a ban on polygamy.

In 2013, U.S. District Court Judge Clark Waddoup overturned the state’s ban on plural marriages. The Browns hope to prove their portrayal on the show, plus the Supreme Court's decision to legalize same-sex marriage, will contribute to the appeals court's decision to uphold its ruling.
