Julie Bowen 'cried and cried' over fear she wouldn't land role of Claire Dunphy on 'Modern Family'

Julie Bowen landed her most career-defining role as Claire Dunphy on ABC’s Emmy darling, Modern Family, but she didn’t think she would get the part because she was pregnant with her now 6-year-old twin boys, Gus and John, at the time.

Bowen, who also has an 8-year-old son Oliver with husband Scott Phillips, told People the multiple call-backs were really weighing on her emotionally.

“I was pregnant with twins, and I kept thinking they weren't going to hire me," she explained. "They kept bringing me in over and over and sort of staring at my humungous belly, and I thought, 'I'm never getting this job.' "

Fearful she would miss out on an opportunity of a lifetime with the “best script I'd read in pilot season in years," she "went home and cried and cried and cried."

Though she’s been nominated for an Emmy every year since 2010 (including this year) – winning in 2011 and 2012 – she wants to eventually move behind the camera or in a more challenging role.

"The reality is, it is a very safe place," she said. "I think to get that feeling of pride back, I need to feel a little unsafe again."
