England loses heartbreaker on own goal, US to face Japan in final

England fell to Japan in the semifinals of the Women’s World Cup on Wednesday in what is the worst and most gut-wrenching way to lose a soccer match.

As ESPN noted, Japan defeated England 2-1 after defender Laura Bassett unintentionally hit the ball into the net past England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley.

Replay confirmed that it was indeed a goal for Japan, which devastated and dashed the hopes of winning it all from Bassett and the England team. Unfortunately, such a crushing defeat will be remembered and likely sting for years to come.

The loss also means that the ladies will now face Germany on Saturday. As previously reported, Team USA beat Germany 2-0 on Thursday. The teams were described as the best two squads competing for the Cup.

As for the U.S. team, the women will meet Japan on Sunday in a matchup they have been waiting for ever since suffering a bitter loss to that team on penalty kicks four years ago.
