The U.S. Postal Service will commemorate the King of Rock n Roll later this summer with the Forever Stamp.
On Wednesday, Postmaster General Megan Brennan announced that Elvis Presley will be honored with the stamp on Aug. 12, during an annual celebration at his Graceland estate.
“Elvis is a natural addition to our Music Icon Series,” Brennan said. “His life and talents are an incredible story. Spanning from his humble beginnings in a Tupelo, Mississippi, two-room house to becoming one of the most legendary performance artists of the 20th Century, Elvis Presley’s works continues to resonate with millions the world over.”
Presley will be the sixth inductee into the Postal Service’s Music Icon Series. Past inductees include Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.
The “Hounddog" and “Jailhouse Rock" singer died on Aug. 16, 1977 at the age of 42. However, he solidified his place in music history before his death with his legendary sound that still lives on today. His legacy is celebrated every year during Elvis Week when fans from all over gather in Memphis to honor him.
The USPS previously featured the King on a stamp in 1993 and that stamp quickly became one of the most popular U.S. commemorative stamps of all time.
