After firing Craig Berube in April, the Philadelphia Flyers search for a new head coach ended with the hiring of University of North Dakota’s Dave Hakstol.

NBC Sports reported that the Flyers named the 46-year-old as the 19th coach in franchise history on Monday.
“Dave brings a wealth of head coaching experience and success to the Philadelphia Flyers organization,” said general manager Ron Hextall. “He’s a proven winner and we are pleased to have him become part of the Flyers family.”
Hextall and the new head coach are familiar with one another as the GM’s son played for Hakstol at North Dakota.
ESPN noted that Hakstol resigned from his position after 11 seasons at the school before accepting the job with the Flyers.
"I am extremely excited to be named the Philadelphia Flyers new head coach," he said in the statement. "Through the process here with Ron and everybody in the Flyers organization I have gained even more of an understanding of the history and tradition of this organization and I'm very proud to become part of the Philadelphia Flyers today."
Before becoming a coach, the Alberta, Canada native played for the Fighting Sioux from 1989 to 1992. After retiring as a player, he became an assistant at the school in 2000 and was named head coach four years later. Now, he will have the task of trying to win with a proud franchise looking to end a long Stanley Cup drought.
