Detroit Lions cut Rodney Austin after domestic violence arrest

The Detroit Lions have cut guard Rodney Austin after he was arrested and charged with domestic violence last week.

The Detroit Free Press reported that Austin turned himself in Friday morning around 9 a.m. Arrest records show that he was charged with four crimes including assaulting a female, assaulting a child under the age of 12, interfering with emergency communication and larceny.

After he posted $2,250 bail, his agent Mark Magazu, who had Austin turn himself in, said that he knew what happened and the process will need to be played out in court.

“We need to let the process play out,” Magazu said. "I'm very well aware of what happened and that's why I know this is not going to be an ongoing issue.”

The Lions releasing the 26-year-old comes as no surprise, after all the league has been trying to repair its image and change how it handles domestic violence cases. Moreover, coach Jim Caldwell said he has a zero-tolerance policy on the issue.

MLive reported that this is the first known arrest during Caldwell’s 15-month tenure as head coach.

Austin was signed by Detroit as an undrafted free agent in 2012. He was released that August, but then signed to the team’s practice squad the following day.
