'The X-Files' reboot nears a greenlight at Fox

We've been hearing talk of a potential X-Files reboot for a while now, but it looks like the dream project is now closer to happening than ever.

According to TV Wise, Fox is close to giving a green-light to an X-Files reboot. The report is that Fox is eyeing a limited run of less than 10 episodes, but talks are apparently still ongoing.

The new limited series is expected to wrap up what was left unresolved by the original TV series, which ended in 2002. And in case you were worried this might be some Ghostbusters style reboot with younger actors, this will be the real deal, with Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny on board. Chris Carter, creator of the original series, is also expected to return to write and executive produce the new episodes.

The limited run aspect of the reboot might be disappointing to some, but it's apparently due both to story reasons and to scheduling, as Duchovny and Anderson are both keeping pretty busy these days. Duchovny is starring in the upcoming NBC show Aquarius, and Gillian Anderson is working on The Fall on BBC. She also has a supporting role on NBC's Hannibal, though she is expected to have a larger role this season, having been added to the main cast.

Fox confirmed earlier this year that they were looking to bring The X-Files back, as we previously reported, but at that point it wasn't totally clear if the project would really happen. Now it looks pretty certain that we'll be seeing some more X-Files very soon.

The X-Files originally ran from 1993 to 2002 on Fox. The series had two feature films, the first of which, just called The X-Files, aired during the course of the show's run. The second, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, was released years later in 2008. However, much to the dismay of fans, the movie didn't really address any of the lingering plot threads of the show, instead being a completely standalone case. This new X-Files reboot should satisfy these fans who were hoping for more resolution of the original series.

For those looking to rewatch the series or to finally catch up before the reboot, The X-Files is currently streaming on Netflix.
