Snoop Dogg is developing an HBO family drama series about 1980s Los Angeles

Snoop Dogg is getting further involved in the world of television, and he will now be developing his own show on HBO.

According to Variety, Snoop Dogg is developing a new series about a family living in Los Angeles in the 1980s who become affected by the Reagan-era policies of the time and the gang violence of the inner city. Presumably this will be inspired by Snoop Dogg's own experiences, as he grew up in Long Beach, California.

He will develop the show with Allen Hughes, director of The Book of Eli and Broken City. Writer Rodney Barnes is also attached to the new show. Barnes is known for his work on The Boondocks and Everybody Hates Chris. Snoop has previously worked with Barnes on The Boondocks, doing a voice for a recurring character.

Snoop Dogg made the announcement during his keynote speech at South by Southwest. He noted that HBO is the No. 1 network for developing these kinds of shows and that it's a dream come true to tell a story with them.

Snoop said in his speech that in this area when Reaganomics began, things like after-school programs were taken away, guns and drugs entered the neighborhood, and the area became far more violent. "To me it was a system that was designed, because when the Reaganomics era began, that’s when this began," he said according to The Daily Beast.

This will not be Snoop Dogg's first experience with television, though he has never been this involved in the development process before. He has appeared as an actor in a number of projects including Empire. He has also been involved in a number of documentary projects including Snoop & Son: A Dad’s Dream, which aired on ESPN.
