'The Last Ship' to close on Broadway, despite Sting's efforts

The new Broadway musical, The Last Ship, will be closing on Broadway on Jan. 24th, despite efforts from main composer, Sting to keep the show going. Sting has been performing with the cast for the last month in an effort to rejuvenate ticket sales and popularity. Sting also went on extensive promotional tours this past fall and summer to help increase awareness for The Last Ship.

New York Times reported that the news about the cancellation was announced through an email from two of the show's producers, Jeffrey Seller and Kathryn Schenker.

The email explained that both producers were saddened by this news. "We have been bewildered and saddened by our inability to sustain an audience for this musical that we deeply love. There are no easy explanations," explained Seller and Schenker in their email.

The Hollywood Reporter added that the show cost over $15 million to produce and an additional $625,000 a week to run.

The creative team behind this project is known for their work on Wicked, Rent and Avenue Q.
