Despite a poor season defensively, Rob Ryan will stay on as defensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints.
The news was first reported by the New Orleans Times-Picayune, which cited an unnamed source. The site did report that the team is still expected to make changes to the defensive coaching staff under Ryan.
Since the Saints also struggled on offense - even at home, the franchise got rid of three assistants on that side of the ball. Tight ends coach Terry Malone, receivers coach Henry Ellard and assistant secondary coach Andre Curtis have all been fired.
New Orleans has to hope that 2014 as an aberration, since Ryan’s first season as defensive coordinator in 2013 under head coach Sean Payton was exceptional. This year though, the defense ranked 31st in yards allowed, ESPN notes.
“If I'm back, I'm gonna start [the improvement] with me,” Ryan told the media after the season ended. “Whatever I can do better, whatever we can do better ... if I have that opportunity."
The Saints finished 2014 with a 7-9 record. Remarkably, the team only won three games at home, where the Saints usually play their best.
