Even though John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight is on a Christmas hiatus, the host and one of TV’s breakout stars from 2014 has appeared again in a YouTube exclusive video. While he trashed Thanksgiving traditions last month, this time, New Year’s Eve is his holiday victim.
“New Year’s Eve is like the death of a pet. You know it’s going to happen, but you are never prepared for how truly awful it is,” Oliver says.
Oliver also noted that the day combines three of the worst things in human existence: “forced interaction with strangers; being drunk, cold and tired; and having to stare at Ryan Seacrest for five solid minutes, waiting for him to tell you what the time is.”
The best thing to do on New Year’s Eve is to try to avoid it. That’s incredibly hard to do, so Oliver lists a few things to do in order to stay away from the annoying festivities.
The video caps off an incredible year for Oliver, whose Last Week Tonight became one of the breakout hits of 2014, producing countless viral videos that made fun of everything from climate change doubters to the Miss America Organization. Last Week Tonight will be back sometime next year.
