Rex Ryan won’t be unemployed for long. The former New York Jets head coach, who was just fired on Monday, has a few interviews lined up with other teams looking for a new head coach.
Ryan and Jets GM John Idzik were both fired on Black Monday, following a dismal four-win season. Now, there are reports that at least two other teams left without coaches on Monday are looking to interview Ryan.
The New York Post’s Brian Costello tweeted Tuesday that both the Atlanta Falcons and the San Francisco 49ers plan on interviewing Ryan. The news was also reported by NFL.com.
The Falcons fired Mike Smith on Monday, following the team’s disappointing season and missing the playoffs for the second straight year. San Francisco is looking for a coach after Jim Harbaugh left to coach Michigan.
Ryan coached the Jets for six season and accumulated a 4-2 postseason record, including two-straight trips to the AFC Championship game. While he has a talent for putting together great defenses, he has struggled to develop quarterbacks and high-scoring offenses.
Both the Falcons and 49ers would be great spots for him, since both franchises already have successful quarterbacks - Matt Ryan in Atlanta and Colin Kaepernick in San Francisco.
