Talk about a classic winter wedding with a modern twist. Superstar Elton John married longtime partner David Furnish in England this weekend, reports US Weekly .
The pair, who met in 1993 and are parents to sons Zachary, 3, and Elijah, 23 months, documented the event on John's new Instagram account. The account may only have a few photos, but Sir John has already collected more than 10,000 followers.
The duo decided to marry after their home country recently allowed same-sex marriages. "I'm very proud of Britain and the laws that we've seen come into existence since we've been together," John said.. "Having our civil partnership was an incredible breakthrough for people that have campaigned for a long time — through the '60s and the '50s in England when it was so hard to be gay and hard to be open about it. And it was a criminal act. So for this legislation to come through is joyous, and we should celebrate it. We shouldn't just say, 'Oh, well we have a civil partnership. We're not going to bother to get married.' We will get married."
The ceremony's date carried heavy significance: The men entered a civil partnership on Dec. 21, 2005 and married on their ninth anniversary, reports DailyMail.com .
In an unusual move, the couple used Instagram - complete with their own hashtags - to share the sweet ceremony. The first, was a virtual invite with a background of roses. "Please join us this Sunday @DavidFurnish and I will be posting special moments from our big day. #ShareTheLove #EltonJohn #DavidFurnish," it read. The comments were largely positive, with sweet messages being added from across the world.
They shared a picture of the paperwork. "That's the legal bit done. Now on to the ceremony! #ShareTheLove @DavidFurnish," read the caption.
Actual attendees were treated to a high-end dinner featuring beef short rib and onion pie, roasted potatoes and, of course, wedding cake.
