Ed Sheeran has had a busy year, which included releasing a brand new album, going on tour around the world and being featured on the soundtrack for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Now, the U.K. sensation can add another line to his resume as online music streaming service, Spotify, has announced that Sheeran was the most streamed artist this year.
CBS News reported that Spotify releases their stats for 2014 which included having over 50 million users, which listened to over seven billion hours of music and created over 733 million playlists this year. Out of seven billion hours of music, it was Sheeran who took home the title of most streamed.
From "Lego House" to "Sing," Sheeran has over 860 million listeners around the world and he also holds the title for most-streamed album in 2014 for X. X has been listened to over 430 million times since it was released back in June.
"It's a great thing to be above so many amazing artists who I'd assume would be streamed more than me," said Sheeran in response to hearing the news.
Spotify also released which song was listened to the most. The title went to Pharrell Williams for "Happy." The song was played more than 260 million plays. The online streaming service has also had controversy in 2014, with several artists pulling their music from Spotify.
Rolling Stone reported back in November that Taylor Swift pulled her entire catalog from the service.
"Music is art, and art is important and rare. Important, rare things are valuable. Valuable things should be paid for," explained Swift in response to her abrupt departure.
