Protests for the cases of Michael Brown and Eric Garner got violent in California on Sunday night.
The protests occurred in Oakland and Berkeley, according to the Los Angeles Times. Local police said that over 500 people came together to protest by the campus of UC Berkeley and moved downtown. Demonstrations also occurred on a California highway that the local highway police investigated.
Reuters reported that Berkeley protesters took over two different areas of a local freeway. Police then used tear gas to disperse the crowd, saying they were being attacked with explosives. Protesters had also looted stores in the city, where police stated that one protester became the victim of assault when they attempted to stop others from looting.
LA Times also said that protests became hectic in Berkeley on Saturday night, where police officers from other areas aided the local department’s force. Six people were arrested that night and three officers were reportedly hurt.
More peaceful protests did occur in other places, according to Reuters. Protesters from a Chicago church demonstrated by moving through the city, and Reggie Bush of the Detroit Lions wore a jersey with Garner’s last words before the game, along with other players.
