Monday night’s episode of NCIS: Los Angeles showed the team investigating a former CIA operative’s death, who appeared to be posing as both a homeless man and a business man.
The team soon discovers that he had stumbled upon an espionage case involving the arrest of the head of the Pena drug cartel. It appeared that the victim, Goodsell, had discovered his son was involved with the case and was keeping an eye on him when he found out about it.
Plus, we also find out in the episode Sam got his young daughter a cell phone in an effort to keep track of her so he knew she’d be safe. This backfires when she continuously calls her dad and the team to ask them silly questions, such as making sure Sam will make it home for dinner. Very cute!
Also in a tender moment between the partners, Kensi shares some information about her past with Deeks, even though he already knew about it. It shows a bond between them since she is willing to talk about it with him.
The episode was very well-done and it also allowed us a glimpse into Callen’s feelings regarding his own family life at one point. Let’s take a look at some of the top ten moments from NCIS: Los Angeles’ episode “The Grey Man.”

10. Hetty on the case
At first while investigating ‘The Grey Man,’ Owen takes Hetty off the case. But eventually, Hetty contacts her team via the video cam in Ops and tells them that she had a talk with Owen and he understands that “this cat,” aka Hetty, would not be placed back in the box.

9. Artie
Kensi and Deeks go undercover to find out why Goodsell was acting both as a homeless man and as a businessman. Deeks decides to don his ‘Artie’ suit, otherwise known as his smelly homelessman’s jacket. He apparently gave it the name Artie.

8. Work in progress
Sam and Callen are talking about how Goodsell had no family and Sam comments it’s hard to start a family in their line of work. Callen reminds him he did and Sam calls him a Grey man, but Callen reminds him he has both a home and a girlfriend. Sam says “you’re welcome,” indicating he helped Callen to be the man he is today.

7. Father of the year
Sam is on the phone with his young daughter, who has a cell phone so that her dad can keep track of her to make sure she is safe. Of course, the little girl doesn’t realize she can’t call her dad for everything and even calls Hetty for an emergency that involves changing what she wants for dinner.

[new page= Goodsell]
6. Goodsell
Through some digging, Eric discovers that Goodsell was the father of Kevin Turner, the federal prosecutor who is linked with a woman named Monica who is associated with the Pena cartel. They realize that Kevin Turner is part of the plan for the cartel to get rid of Pena since he was going to give the name of the officials who were part of the Mexican drug ring.

5. Team undercover
Sam and Callen join the undercover work as DEA agents and Kensi teases Deeks about them doing better work than he is, since he is just, in her own words, “riding Artie’s coattails.” Deeks sees how well his team is doing and talks to his jacket, telling him not to worry. Kensi is completely bemused and tells her partner he definitely belongs with the homeless people.

4. Deeks’ plan
Deeks’ plan to save Monica and her daughter, Amy, is to fill the diner they are in with gas in order to get them to let the girls go. But when the men abandon their guns and go at him with a meat cleaver, Deeks tells Kensi ‘plan B’ and she shoots inside the diner to cause an explosion. Once the bad guys are dead, Deeks and Kensi rescue the girls.

3. Kensi and Deeks heart to heart
While undercover, Kensi admits to Deeks that she was homeless after her dad died and then she tells him she knows Hetty told him. He tries to tell her he doesn’t know, but she knows him too well. Deeks asks if she wants to talk about it and she doesn’t say much, but tells him she was a different person then and he tells her that he would have liked to know her. It’s a powerful moment between the agents and partners.

2. Best part of me
In the middle of trying to take down the two men holding Monica and her daughter hostage, Kensi begins to admit to Deeks why she didn’t tell him about being homeless. He teases her back about choosing now as the right time and she admits that she only wants Deeks to see “the best part of me.” In order to make the situation lighter, Deeks asks if he’s talking about her feet and Kensi just tells him it’s one of the reasons she doesn’t talk, but we all know why Deeks went that route.

[new page= Dad]
1. Dad
Callen is at the office working late when Hetty urges him to go home. He asks Hetty why Goodsell never told his son who he was. In a way, the question is almost a reflection of Callen’s own life in not knowing his family. Hetty tells him it’s possibly that he didn’t know how and she tells him that the Grey Man “never reveals his secrets.”
