The captain of a ferry in South Korea that turned over and sank in April was given his sentence on Tuesday.
Capt. Lee Joon-Seok was sentenced to 36 years in prison, while the chief engineer of the ferry also received 30 years in prison, according to CBS News. 13 crew workers for Lee’s ferry received almost 20 years.
CNN reported that Lee had been accused of negligence and murder, among other charges. South Korean prosecutors also accused Lee of not using evacuation equipment, such as life vests, and were looking to sentence him to death. Lee wasn’t convicted for murder, but the chief engineer Park Gi-ho was convicted on the charge.
CBS News also reported that recovery crews found 295 bodies from the sunken ferry, but there were still nine bodies missing. Officials in South Korea said that they stopped searching for the unaccounted bodies in part due to diver safety.
The Celebrity Café reported in April that the ship made a heavy turn that caused the ship to sink, and that prosecutors thought that Lee wasn’t at the bridge during that turn and had abandoned the ship early along with others.
