The New York Jets stink, so they’ve decided they might as well see what Geno Smith can do after sitting on the bench since Week 8. Smith will start against the Miami Dolphins on Monday night.
The 2-9 team announced on Twitter this morning that head coach Rex Ryan spoke with Michael Vick and Smith on Tuesday to tell them that Smith will start the team’s next game.
According to ESPN’s sources, Ryan was hoping to start Vick again, but general manager John Idzik insisted that Smith be given another shot.
Smith was benched after the team’s Week 8 loss to the Buffalo Bills, which put the team at 1-7. Vick filled in, but has been terrible, aside from the team’s bizarre win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. On this past Monday, Vick only completed seven of 19 passes for 76 yards with an interception.
The Bills, who were unable to practice most of last week due to snow, blew out the Jets on Monday, 38-3. The game was even played in Detroit and came after the Jets’ bye week.
Ryan’s job is on the line and he will likely be fired at the end of the season, if not earlier. Sources have told the New York Post that Ryan has known all season that Idzik was ready to fire him anyway. The Jets began the season $20 million under the salary cap, a clear sign that Idzik wasn’t interested in giving Ryan talent to help him win games.
The Jets will next play a 6-5 Miami team that’s looking for a wild card playoff spot. It’s not going to get any easier for an inept team that can’t score.
