George Lucas' 'Strange Magic' to be released in January

Disney is releasing another animated film, but this one has a story created by George Lucas.

Strange Magic, a CGI-animated film by Lucasfilm, was revealed by Disney on Tuesday, according to Entertainment Weekly. The William Shakespeare play A Midsummer Night’s Dream reportedly served as the inspiration for the film’s story.

The film’s story will include famous pop songs from the previous 60 years, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Lucas created the story, but the screenplay was written by David Berenbaum, Irene Mecchi, and Gary Rydstrom. Rydstrom had previously worked in sound for various films, but directed a short film based off of Toy Story and will be directing Strange Magic, while Lucas will be an executive producer.

While the story or plot wasn’t fully explained, Disney revealed that the plot centered around fantastical creatures including goblins and fairies who look for, and fight over, a magical potion.

WSJ also reported that the film’s cast includes Alan Cumming, Kristen Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, and Alfred Molina, among others.

EW reported that Strange Magic will be released by Touchstone Pictures on January 23, 2015.
