French president, Paris mayor split over 2024 Olympic bid

In 2024, it will be exactly 100 years since the Summer Olympics Games were hosted in Paris. France’s president is in favor of bidding to host the Games there again, but the city’s mayor is not so sure.

The Associated Press reported that President Francois Hollande and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo are divided on the issue.

Hollande said Thursday that he is in favor of a potential bid for the city, but the following day Hidalgo said that she is "not into chasing dreams" and has concerns over the cost.

Reuters noted that the mayor said a bid for the City of Lights would depend on if it would be solid from an economic standpoint and environmentally sustainable. Hidalgo added that the capital city should be very prepared should it bid after losing out on the 1992, 2008 and 2012 Games. France did not bid for the 2016 or 2020 Olympics.

Bids for the host city will begin next year and the winning bid will be announced in 2017.
