Elton John might not like Russia’s anti-gay policies, but he continues to perform there. Over the weekend, he performed in St. Petersburg and lashed out against homophobia.
A rep for John posted his speech on Facebook, in which he complained about the recent decision to pull down a Steve Jobs statue after current Apple CEO Tim Cook came out as gay.
“Can this be true? Steve’s memory is re-written because his successor at Apple, Tim Cook, is gay?! Does that also make iPads gay propaganda?! Is Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music ‘sexually perverting’?!” the “Crocodile Rock” singer told his audience. “As a gay man, I’ve always felt so welcome here in Russia. Stories of Russian fans - men and women who fell in love dancing to ’Nikita’ or their kids who sing along to ‘Circle of Life’ - mean the world to me.”
John later stressed that his music is not gay propaganda, but an expression of who he is. “If we start punishing people for that, the world will lose its humanity,” he concluded.
As Rolling Stone notes, John previously called Russia’s anti-gay propaganda law “inhumane and it’s isolating” during a Moscow show in 2013.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer also praised Pope Francis over the summer for being more open when it comes to homosexuality. He also suggested that if Jesus Christ were around today, he would support gay marriage.
