Two new particles were discovered, thanks again to CERN’s Large Hadron Collider.
The lab discovered on Wednesday that the two particles are part of the baryon family, according to CERN. The particles were discovered as part of another experiment using the Large Hadron Collider. While the particles theoretically existed before due to a scientific model on quarks, they weren’t officially seen until now.
The baryon family is a particle family where protons and neutrons are classified in, according to the Wall Street Journal. Three quarks, which create matter, also help build baryons. The newly discovered particles are reportedly six times larger than a proton.
WSJ reported that CERN became famous for discovering the Higgs boson particle in 2012. That particle revealed how mass is received in particles. While this new discovery isn’t as groundbreaking, it adds to the scientific knowledge of subatomic and even smaller particles.
CERN explained that the Large Hadron Collider had been shutdown, but is being worked on to function using both an increased energy and a higher beam intensity before it’s turned on again by Spring 2015.
