Mary J. Blige announces new album, features duets with Sam Smith, Emeli Sande

Mary J. Blige, the Queen of R&B, is bringing her talents to London. The singer announced a new album on Tuesday, which will focus on the London music scene and feature duets with top British artists.

The album is simply titled The London Sessions and will be headlined by duets with Sam Smith, Emeli Sande and Disclosure. Other artists featured on the album are Jimmy Naples, Eg White, Naughty Boy and Sam Romans.

“It’s all about the London music scene and I’m so excited to have been part of it, to record my album,” Blige said in a statement to Billboard. “The songs are fun, therapeutic and soulful. This is a beautiful change for me and I’m proud of what we have done here.”

London will be Blige’s first album for Capitol Records. Her longtime label, Interscope, is also under the Universal Music Group umbrella, so she’s not going anywhere.

The London Sessions is a fantastic album; another step forward for this great and enduring artist, and I am thrilled that she is now an important member of our Capitol Records family,” Capitol chairman Steve Barnett said.

“Therapy” is the lead single from the album. It was written by Smith, Blige and Eg White.

This is Blige’s 13th studio album. As The LA Times notes, she previously released the Think Like A Man Too soundtrack earlier this year.

Blige’s announcement comes just a few weeks ahead of her iTunes Festival in London on Sept. 25. The album comes out on Dec. 2.
