The Los Angeles Dodgers have placed shortstop Hanley Ramirez on the 15-day disabled list Sunday.
The Associated Press reported that the injury is a strained right rib cage muscle.
The infielder first felt discomfort prior to Friday night’s series opener against the Milwaukee Brewers and exited the game in the bottom of the first inning.
Dodgers’ manager Don Mattingly told the media that the team was being cautious by placing Ramirez on the 15-day DL. He said he did not believe the shortstop would need any more time than two weeks to recover.
"He could be ready in 10 games but we don't want to (bring) him back in seven and then have something worse happen and maybe lose him the rest of the year,” the skipper said. “We want to assure ourselves he'll be available down the stretch."
The 30-year-old has also battled shoulder and calf problems for much of the season. However, he has contributed 12 HRs, 58 RBIs, a .277 BA, and a .367 OBP, according to Baseball-Reference.com.
The club has recalled INF Darwin Barney from Triple-A Albuquerque.
