Leading up to Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Beyonce and Jay Z were the constant center of divorce rumors. While Beyonce’s mother squashed those rumors, the music power couple appeared to end it all by looking like the perfect happy family at the awards show. Now, Beyonce’s father is speaking out with an interesting hypothesis about the rumors.
During an appearance on a Houston radio show, Matthew Knowles suggested that the rumors were just part of a PR stunt to boost ticket sales. The music executive said that rumors like these are used to “ignite” tours, notes The New York Post.
“The Jedi mind trick fools you a lot of times. So things you see sometimes are [makes poof noise],” Knowles told the Roula and Ryan Show.
Knowles also suggested that the infamous elevator fight with Beyonce, Jay Z and her sister Solange, may have been staged. He didn’t give details, but he did note, “Everyone’s talking about it. Ticket sales went up. Solange’s album sales went up 200 percent.”
Rumors about the impending divorce even suggested that the couple were avoiding each other when they weren’t on stage during the On The Run tour.
Even if Knowles’ theory is true, it is an odd tactic to boost an already highly anticipated tour. It reached $100 million in total gross earlier this month and probably would have done so even without the rumors.
Beyonce’s mother, Tina Knowles, also said that the rumors weren’t true. She said that everything was “perfect” between them.
Beyonce won three VMAs, along with the special Vanguard Award.
