Yahoo has announced the original comedy shows that it is developing for its Yahoo Screen feature. The move was rumored earlier in the month and is Yahoo’s latest attempt to broaden its interests to survive.
Earlier this month, a Wall Street Journal report said that the company, lead by CEO Marissa Mayer, was close to ordering four new shows. Yahoo did announce plans for shows at its NewsFront presentation in New York, but only two projects were confirmed.
The first is Other Space, which comes from Emmy nominated director Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Office). It is set in the 22nd Century, with the human race officially bored by traditional space travel. The series will focus on a journey that was supposed to be mundane, but becomes dangerous for its mismatched crew. Other Space will feature eight half-hour shows.
Sin City Saints is executive produced by Mike Tollin (One Tree Hill, Smallville) and Emmy nominee Bryan Gordon (The Office, Curb Your Enthusiasm). This eight-episode show will focus on a new basketball team owned by a Silicon Valley tycoon, who learns that he’s not really prepared to run a team.
Yahoo said that the shows will be available on Yahoo Screen in 2015 and on the Yahoo Screen mobile app. They will also be available on Apple TV and Roku.
Yahoo isn’t the only company trying to be a new player in the original online programming world. Microsoft unveiled its line-up of XBox shows on Monday.
