Netflix announces premiere date for Ricky Gervais’ ‘Derek’ season 2

Netflix's Derek has announced the premiere date for the next season staring Ricky Gervais. Derek will be premiering on Friday, May 30th. All six episodes of the second season will be available for instant streaming.

Variety reported that the second season will be available for all Netflix users expect for those in the U.K. In the U.K. the series will be shown on Channel 4, which was the first to order Derek, they own the rights to the show in that country.

Netflix is known for their original programming such as Orange is the New Black and House of Cards but the company is moving towards more original comedies as well. Netflix ordered Grace and Frankie which will star Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin. The show will be available for instant streaming in the summer of 2015.

Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s chief content officer, spoke about the upcoming series and what it is like working with Gervais. "Ricky is a terrific partner and he has created a heartfelt character, in Derek, that Netflix members have fallen in love with. His attention to detail and relentless vision to change conventional storytelling on television is perfectly aligned with what we are trying to do with our original series," said Sarandos.

Entertainment Weekly reported that Derek focuses on Gervais and a group of outsiders that are having issues living within societal norms.
