Steve Masiello thought he had a job coaching the men's basketball team at the University of South Florida until the school did a background check on him and found a flaw on his resume.
Masiello posted on his resume that he graduated from the University of Kentucky in 2000 with a degree in communications, after review, South Florida found that Masiello did not graduate from Kentucky, according to USA Today. This flaw cost Masiello his chance of coaching at the university.
Masiello had agreed to leave his post at Manhattan College for the South Florida position. It does not look like Manhattan will be welcoming Masiello back as coach after this situation.
ESPNNewYork.com reports that Manhattan placed Masiello on leave while he is reviewing his degree status with Kentucky. A bachelor's degree is required to be a coach at Manhattan College and Masiello does not have one.
Former basketball coach and Hall of Famer Jim Calhoun believes that Manhattan should take Masiello back. He told ESPNNewYork.com that Masiello is the same guy that he was before this happened and that Masiello will fix his mistake and Manhattan still want him to be their coach.
Masiello went 61 for 39 in his three seasons at Manhattan with a 28-5 record this season, earning his team a sport in the NCAA tournament where the team lost to Louisville in the first round, according to USA Today.
Manhattan College is in a tricky situation now with Masiello, if he fixes his mistake, Manhattan should give him his job back if he wants it.
