An insurance executive who struck and killed a Miami heat dancer on her motorcycle in 2010 has been found guilty of DUI manslaughter.
According to CBS Miami, the jury found Mario Careaga, of Fort Lauderdale, guilty of DUI manslaughter in the death of Miami Heat dancer Nancy Lopez-Ruiz.
The New York Daily News noted that Careaga was accused of recklessly blowing through three lanes of traffic before slamming into Lopez-Ruiz’s bike. She was thrown more than 100 feet and died at the scene.
The dancer and college student had parked her motorcycle on a median on U.S. 1 when she was struck by Careaga. Prosecutors said that the executive had just left a party with his partner and his blood alcohol level was .24, which is more than twice the legal limit.
The victim’s mother explained how she felt after the verdict was read.
“This is not going to bring Nancy back to us but this is going to give us some kind of peace.”
Careaga faces up to 15 years in prison.
