Jim Lange, who hosted the popular TV game show The Dating Game, has died. He was 81-years-old.
He died Tuesday following a heart attack at his Mill Valley, Calif. home, his wife Nancy confirmed to the Associated Press.
Lange was a native of St. Paul, Minn. and launched his career on radio in the Twin Cities, reports The Minneapolis Star Tribune. After college, he served in the Marines and then moved to the San Francisco area. There, he started on radio on KGO. In 1962, he made his TV debut as the announcer of The Tennessee Ernie Ford Show.
In 1965, his career changed forever when he was tapped to host ABC’s The Dating Game. He hosted for over a decade, drawing celebrities like Michael Jackson, Steve Martin Arnold Schwarzenegger, Farrah Fawcett and many, many more to the show.
During the show, three contestants would have to answer questions from a man or woman, hidden from view. The answers would help the main contestant pick out who would be the best date.
“As much as he's known for his television work, his real love was radio,” his wife Nancy told the AP. “He loved doing local radio, especially before it was computerized.”
He’s survived by his wife, his sister, five children, two stepchildren and four grandchildren.
