American women's hockey team to challenge Canada for the gold medal

The USA women’s hockey team conquered Sweden with a 6-1 win to launch the team into the gold medal final. There they will face arch rival Canada, who beat Switzerland 3-1 in their qualifying game.

The American team has received a medal in women’s hockey at every Olympics since the event’s debut at the 1998 Nagano Games. According to CBS News, a win in Thursday’s game could give the USA its first gold medal since those first Olympics. A loss would leave the team with yet another silver, while Canada would claim its fourth consecutive gold.

The Washington Post reports that this gold medal match will see Canada in its fifth final – the team has played in every final since Nagano. Meanwhile, the USA has competed in all but one final.

At the Vancouver Games in 2010, the USA suffered a tough loss to Canada in the gold medal match.

“It wasn’t a great feeling and it’s still a feeling that haunts a bunch of us today,” American forward Hillary Wright told reporters. “And it’s definitely in the back of our minds that we don’t want to feel that way again.”
