American Hustle director David O. Russell might be interested in making the transition to television, but he’s not doing it any time soon. A month after his involvement in an ABC project likely guaranteed its straight-to-series order, he has dropped out.
Russell was slated to executive produce the project with Carl Beverly and Sarah Timberman. It was written by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) and Russell was also set to co-write.
Despite Russell’s departure, Deadline reports that the series order is still a go. In fact, the project has gained a title - The Club - and its first star, Sin City 2’s Callie Hernandez. She’ll play Ana, a worker at the club who’s been stealing stuff and selling it. The project is described as an upstairs/downstairs series.
The Club will be co-produced by CBS Television Studios and ABC Studios.
Russell can’t be blamed for putting his TV debut on hold. He’s on an unparalleled run of success as his last three films - The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook and Hustle - have all garnered him Best Director and best Picture Oscar nods. Last month, it was rumored that he wants to work with Jennifer Lawrence for a third time in his next film.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, ABC has also put in a series order for Secrets & Lies.
