Baz Luhrmann could direct HBO’s Stanley Kubrick ‘Napoleon’ project, Steven Spielberg producing

This could amazing if it happens. Baz Luhrmann, the director known for crafting visual feats like The Great Gatsby and Moulin Rouge!, is reportedly being considered to direct the Stanley Kubrick-written Napoleon. This is the same project that Steven Spielberg announced he was developing as a TV miniseries in March and has landed at HBO.

Deadline, which first reported the news, cautioned that deals are far from being made. But if it happens, this would easily become the biggest mini-series in HBO’s history.

Back in March, Spielberg surprised the film world by telling France’s Canal+ that he planned on reviving Kubrick’s dream to make a film about Napoleon. It’s a project Kubrick had hoped to make as early as 1961, but it never happened thanks to budget concerns. The 2001: A Space Odyssey director died in 1999, without ever seeing his dream come to fruition.

As for Luhrmann, he directed Warner Bros.’ hit adaptation of The Great Gatsby with Leonardo DiCaprio and his 2001 film Moulin Rouge! was nominated for the Best Picture Oscar.

Last week, it was reported that Rupert Sanders was hired by Warner Bros. to do a ‘Scarface-style’ Napoleon.
