Kristin Chenoweth reopens famous Saenger Theater

Kristin Chenoweth took her talents to New Orleans on Saturday night, where she helped officially reopen the Saenger Theater on Canal Street.

According to E! Online, the powerhouse singer dazzled the audience by performing a range of tunes including Broadway hits and American classics.

The 45-year-old took the stage in a scarlet and black strapless gown and proved her place on the stage. Chenoweth showed great showmanship as she belted out songs like “Que Sera, Sera,” “Moon River,” “Feed the Birds,” “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” and “The Man That Got Away.”

The broadway diva showcased her talents as a soprano and also peformed “Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again” from “The Phantom of the Opera,” and “I Could Have Danced All Night” from “My Fair Lady.”

The 4’11” star also satisfied the audience with some of her signature songs from “Wicked.” Even though she’s performed “Popular” countless times, she added a twist by choosing an arrangement in English, German, French, and Japanese.

The Times-Picayune reports that Chenoweth was also accompanied on stage by some surprise guests. The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra played the music for the “Wicked” starlet’s set and even New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu joined her on stage for “Do You Hear the People Sing” from “Les Miserables.”

After the show Chenoweth shared her excitement about being a part of the evening tweeting, “I love you New Orleans 🙂 i really really do.” and “Thank you to the city of NOLA and the Mayor for the keys [to the city] #aspecialnight.”

The Saenger Theatre was closed in 2005 after suffering damages from Hurricane Katrina, but has now reopened its doors due to $52 million worth of renovations.
