With his debut albumMy Nocturne, guitarist and composer Teriver Cheung brings the cool classic modern jazz vibes to the airwaves.
The Hong Kong native has always had an appeal and connection to music since he was a child. Cheung started playing the piano at the early age of 5. Playing the piano introduced him to classical music. He would play a lot of Chopin, sonatas, and Bach. At the age of 16, Cheung moved to an edgier instrument, the guitar.
Learning how to play theses two instruments shaped his sound as an artist. The piano introduced him to the world of classical music. Playing the guitar Cheung realized his love for jazz.
About his album and vision on his music he told
CD Universe
“In fact, 'My Nocturne' is a Chopin-ish thing. I always have that romantic influence in my writing. I love the sound of Stravinsky, who makes me think about rhythm, texture and orchestration. I also listen to a lot of other music, not just jazz, and I try to write every song with a different concept."
Cheung now lives in New York City. He has also ventured to the world of neo-soul and funk with the band ‘Nuf Said.
My Nocturne starts off with the single “Fragile” which has a dark and blues harmony. The saxophone is prominent throughout the whole song and the guitar and drums brings a dynamic and fresh sound.
This sound sets the tone for the following tracks, such as in the single “Hallowing” which starts off in a slow tempo then switches to an upbeat fast beat. It goes back and forth from slow and fast and showcases Cheung’s versatility as an artist.
Overall My Nocturne is a solid album that reflects the world of jazz and classical music.
