Barack Obama gets his very own Secret Service detail. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff gave a green light to Senator Obama's request after consulting with House and Senate leaders, both Republican and Democrat. No one in Obama's camp or Homeland Security was willing to comment on the move, which is unusually early for a presidential candidate who is not a veteran of the administration.
A spokesman for the Secret Service, Eric Zahren, did issue a statement, however. Zahren confirmed that the request was authorized and that the Secret Service is sending out guards today for the Senator. He would not specify numbers or specific details. Zahren did acknowledge that this was the earliest such move, but also said that it was also the earliest kick-off of any campaign season. There has been concern recently about threats toward Sen. Obama.
Fellow Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, being a former First Lady, already has her own Secret Service detail.
