Death of al-Qaeda Leader Generates Confusion

Confusion reigned in the aftermath of the shooting of a senior al-Qaeda leader on Tuesday. U.S. and Iraqi forces were responsible for the kill, and afterward, there was apparently some confusion as to exactly who had been shot. Muhared Abdul Latif al-Jebouri, the senior al-Qaeda leader believed to be responsible for American journalist Jill Carroll's kidnapping and also for the murder of an American peace activist, is confirmed to be the one shot. But initially, Iraqi officials apparently mixed up al-Jebouri and an al-Qaeda kingpin, Abu Ayyub al-Masri, who was said to be shot the same day. It is believed now that the alleged al-Masri shooting was actually al-Jebouri.

U.S. military officials are now saying that al-Jebouri's was the only body taken from the shooting.

Al-Jebouri was at one time an intelligence officer for Saddam Hussein. He was also named "information minister" for the Islamic State of Iraq. The kidnapping of Jill Carroll in January 2006 and the kidnapping and murder of Tom Fox, an American peace activist, are attributed to al-Jebouri.
