DC Madam Scandal Nearing Resolution

The current sex scandal in our nation's capital appears to be nearing a resolution. So far, the scandal has led to the resignation of a senior government official, and on Friday, a TV program will expose the inner workings of the escort service used by members of the political establishment.

The so-called "DC Madam," Deborah Jeane Palfrey, has made ominous promises to call former clients of high standing in D.C. to give testimony about the legality of her business, what she refers to as a legal "sexual fantasy service." This threat has thrown the press into an uproar. And Ms. Palfrey's candid approach toward revealing the secrets of her little black book of clients has distinguished her from other infamous madams, who are known as much for the secrets they held as for the ones they spilled.

The deputy secretary of state in charge of foreign aid, Randall Tobias, resigned last week following a reluctant confession that he used Palfrey's service. Ironically, Mr. Tobias was previously heading the enforcement of U.S. policy requiring recipients of AIDS-related funding to condemn prostitution.
