Rapper Busta Rhymes, also known as Trevor Smith, failed to use his rhyme busting skills to get him out of trouble with NYPD cops early this morning at 12:48 a.m. After cops pulled him over in Manhattan because the windows of his 2006 Yukon Denali were too dark, he was asked to present paperwork. A clumsy Busta, whose breath, according to the police, smelled strongly of alcohol, dropped his wallet, and then failed a Breathalyzer test.
Busta is currently being held at the police station, until his arraignment, which is expected to be held this afternoon.
Busta, who is not a stranger to legal trouble, was scheduled to go to trial this month on assault charges from August 2006, when he was accused of attacking a fan after a concert.
The rapper may be involved in the mystery murder of one of his former bodyguards, Israel Ramirez, who was fatally shot while standing next to Busta. As of now, the police say the rapper has refused to communicate with investigators about his knowledge of the killing. Paul J. Browne, a deputy police commissioner, said that Busta's refusal to cooperate is preventing other witnesses from cooperating as well, a stall that has left the case unsolved.
So far, Busta's lawyer, Scott Leemon, has not returned phone calls from The New York Times seeking comment on the rapper's drunk driving charges.
